Touhou 12.8: Great Fairy Wars/Scoring Guides/Normal C2/Stage 2 Boss

From The Danmaku Gameplay Wiki

Resources[edit | edit source]

The freeze execution during this boss fight is very impactful for the required resources you need. The execution determines whether you can do two bombs at the start of Stage 3 to freeze bullets from the big jellybean fairies.

If you are one life behind the ideal resources entering this boss fight (preferred resources = 605% Motiv / 110% PF), you will skip a suicide on Luna's first spell.

The preferred minimum resources to end Luna's fight with are 710% Motivation and 130% PF.

Nonspell 1[edit | edit source]

On Normal, Luna's first non shoots it's patterns in slower intervals for the first three waves. Luna's HP is also limited. Therefore the first three freezes will freeze the first wave that get fired. These freezes should be non-damaging. Luna's positioning determines whether you can get 30%s or not. Ideally she is positioned as low and as close to the middle as possible. On Wave 1 your freeze can be a 30% if you time the freeze right before the round bullets start homing in on your position. You want to see the jellybeans near the side barely getting frozen before going offscreen, for maximizing coverage.

Once the third freeze is executed, start freezing her patterns every two waves. This gives bigger freezes, ideally between 50% and 60%. The ideal situation for these freezes to happen is for Luna to be relatively high on the screen. Your freeze timing is dependent on your distance (near the outer jellybeans) and your Ice Power. In most cases if your Ice Power is 100%, release your freeze as soon as Luna starts firing a new wave. Time your freeze later if your Ice Power is less than 100% or if Luna is relatively close to where you freeze bullets. When Luna is close, her new jellybean wave won't expand if you freeze early. If Luna is further away, you may need to try to move through the jellybeans and freeze inbetween them, rather than in front. When Luna is closer to the side, release your freeze closer to the other side.

When attempting to regain Ice Power, it helps to start off close to Luna while sideshooting, then moving down as the bullets are being fired. This ensures that you keep sideshooting, you graze some extra bullets and the round bullets that are fired in the opposite direction are less likely to despawn at the top of the screen.

Moonlight "Moon Stillness"[edit | edit source]

The normal route here will use 2 suicides. When the pattern starts firing, use a bomb about 1½ seconds later. while the bomb is active, graze the outer ring of bullets without deleting bullets (you can delete them if you need more Ice Power - for sacrificing a bit of score).

Shoot Luna slightly so you have 100% Ice Power for the next freeze. This freeze should be released when the outer ring closes in on you. The timing here varies on how hard the RNG gets and what you're comfortable with. Delaying your freeze gives significantly bigger freezes, but generally exposes you to more risk so proceed with caution. After releasing your freeze, suicide by ramming into Luna.

Release the next freeze earlier than the previous so you can get a bigger bomb that you release straight after. Depending on your risk appetite, you can do this first freeze early to simply ensure it's well above 30% or be safe and time the freeze a bit later. Either way, release the bomb soon after the previous freeze explodes and graze the outer ring of bullets.

The next three freezes are the same as the ones from paragraph 2 and 3 (big freeze > early freeze > bomb).

After these freezes do another big freeze for which the timing depends on how risky you want to play and what the bullet RNG is. The last freeze before the timer runs out should be released at 2.00s left if your Ice Power is 100% (a 100% freeze lasts about 1.80s).

When doing a 1-suicide pattern to make up for a lost life, the only differences are that you skip the second suicide and you do alot less sideshooting and focus more on grazing bullets are the outer ring closes in on you (see the WR video).

Nonspell 2[edit | edit source]

The hardest pattern in this stage and one of the hardest patterns in the game. This pattern is very important for getting 30%s! You want to get as many as you can get and can't afford to miss most of them.

Sideshooting to gain Ice Power should be done with delicate care here, as the ice damage that is caused here can vary. For this reason you won't be shooting until you reach 100% Ice Power and instead let as much of the remaining power be built up over time or from the small amounts of graze. The first freeze can be set up by sideshooting and dashing right when the bullets get close, then go up to misdirect the round bullets in a more favorable way. This first freeze is however not important to optimize alot, as this freeze cannot reach 30%. Subsequent freezes can reach 30% (even if the second freeze is still unlikely).

For the remaining freezes the execution doesn't change, but depending on movement RNG you may have to make different decisions. In general you will still sideshoot to also aim the new round bullets slightly sideways, then if there is room to the left or right of you, dash in that direction, go near the ring of fireballs that will then be stationary and release your freeze near alot of round bullets. These freezes should be released about 0.5-1 second after Luna fires her new wave, as doing this increases the chance your freeze will be a 30%.

Generally freezes here have the highest potential when Luna is positioned low as less bullets fired upwards will despawn, but this is also much more dangerous. This low position might force you to not dash to the side to macro the round bullets as you don't have the room to do so. In this situation you will have to micro through the round bullets instead, if no safespot to the side presents itself.

Sometimes you won't be able to do the last small freeze at the end due to doing too much damage but this isn't a big deal. As an indication whether you got enough PF to do the two bombs at the start of Stage 3 now, you'd like to have a minimum of around 200% PF after this nonspell is over.

Light Barrier "Wall Break"[edit | edit source]

Due to this spell's high HP, you will be doing lots of shooting. Start by lining up with the right side of the dark spot at the bottom of the HUD. This lets you dodge the fireballs as you move upwards. Move to the middle once the stars go high enough and release a bomb when the timer hits around 41.00s (right before a new fireball waves hit). This timing generally gives high freezes and this lets the freeze trigger right before new fireballs get fired. Important given you have to spend alot of time waiting for new freeze opportunities.

After this bomb freezes bullets, move back to the original safespot and move up gradually the same way again. Now afterwards you will start freezing bullets as they pass over Luna. From here the collection of freezes will vary wildly as the bullet RNG will never give you consistently sized freezes. In the same way will freezes do varying amounts of ice damage. During a freeze try to pointblank graze new fireballs to gain Ice Power back and shoot Luna after the ice explodes briefly. Whenever alot of bullets gather above and/or below, try to prioritize on moving closer to these bullets to freeze them. It's preferred if you can get one 30% during this spell's regular freezes, but bigger freezes does mean you may lose out on one freeze (+ the damage), so they're not as beneficial for direct score gain.

If the timer is nearly depleted and you hear the low HP sound after a freeze, stop shooting and release your second bomb at about 3.50s. Ideally you do have a couple of seconds left between your last freeze and the second bomb to get more consistent screen coverage.

Moonlight "Silent Cyclone"[edit | edit source]

The freeze execution is simple but this is one of the more difficult patterns to dodge. You freeze on the left side of the screen whenever the jellybeans angle to the left. The ideal position to freeze this pattern is as shown in the below clip. Inbetween freezes your sideshooting should be done diligently, as you may lose out on a freeze when not doing so. You should also not charge your freeze until shortly before your freeze should be released as this allows you to dodge unfocused when necessary. Whenever possible place your freeze inbetween two jellybeans to widen the space where bullets can get frozen. When you face hard RNG right before you should release your freeze, simply release it to be safe at the cost of a slightly worse freeze.

The last freeze should be done on the other side of the screen since there's not enough time left to wait for the bullets to move back left. This freeze is going to be a shorter one (around 50-75%) and so this freeze should also be placed closer to Luna. If any of your previous freezes end up not connecting with Luna, do a quick and short freeze to make up for this mistake.
